IBS is a disorder which affects in the main, the colon or the large intestines, which is where the body stores stools. As it is a syndrome, it has various symptoms, but the causes for the syndrome are not actually know.
IBS is very prevalent in America, and it is thought that is possibly lack of research that is slowing up finding enough knowledge about ibs. The research industries only really tend to look into life threatening conditions, and as ibs does not pose any threat to the patient, it is put off till later.
Another reason why there is slo little knowledge on what may actually cause irritable bowel syndrome is the fact that the symptoms are many and varied, with no two people presenting with exactly the same symptoms.
IBS is certainly for common amongst those aged 20+, it can also be found in children. The symptoms of ibs in children tend to be much milder. If you think your child is showing any of the signs that could be related to ibs, it is important to seek medical advice so that anything more serious can be ruled out.
The main symtoms that you are likely to notice in a child with irritable bowel syndrome are diarrhea and constipation (or a mixture of the two together), and cramping around the stomach area.
Diarrhea is a sudden change in frequency of your child’s bowel habits, often accompanied by a sudden uncontrollable urge to pass a stool, which can lead to incontinence. Excessive diarrhea in a child can easily lead to dehyradtion, so you need to keep a close eye on this, and speak to your doctor if you are concerned.
On the other hand constipation is when the stool is compacted and too hard to pass easily. To overcome this you need to make sure to add extra fiber to your childs diet.
Check with your child if he is the age where he does not need your help, and find out if he has skipped bowel movements, or has had excessive bowel movements, and then you can seek the help you need.
Do not worry about your child having ibs, it will not be a threat to their general health. However, in order to stop any serious symptoms, it is important to get your doctor to check him sooner rather than later.
